Live resin is a cannabis concentrate made from fresh-frozen plants rather than dried and cured flower. That one difference is what gives it its reputation for big flavor.
How it’s made
Growers harvest the plant and freeze it right away, usually within hours, skipping the drying and curing steps. Producers then extract the material with a hydrocarbon solvent, such as butane or propane, at very low temperatures. The solvent is purged afterward, leaving a sticky, aromatic concentrate.
Why it tastes different
Terpenes, the aromatic compounds in cannabis, evaporate and break down during drying and curing. Flash-freezing preserves more of them, so live resin tends to smell and taste closer to the fresh plant.
What you’ll see on the shelf
Live resin comes in several textures, including sauce (runny, with terpene liquid and crystals), badder, and sugar. It’s usually sold as a dab, in a vape cartridge, or in some disposables. Colors run from pale gold to deep amber.
Worth knowing
It usually costs more than standard concentrates because the process is more demanding. Concentrates are also far more potent than flower, so start with a very small amount. Look for lab results on the label or a QR code. And don’t confuse it with live rosin, which uses heat and pressure instead of solvents.
