What Happens When a Product Doesn’t Scan at the Dispensary?

It’s not always a simple fix. Here’s what to know about product discrepancies.

Licensed dispensaries track every product from seed to sale, so each package carries a unique tag that staff scan at checkout. When a scan fails, it’s usually a paperwork problem, not a sign that something is wrong with the product.

Why a product might not scan

The most common reasons are a damaged or smudged tag, a package that hasn’t been fully received into the shop’s inventory system yet, a tag that doesn’t match the product, or a temporary system delay. Occasionally an item is on hold, for example because of a recall or a testing issue. This is all part of seed-to-sale tracking.

What staff usually do

They might type the tag ID in by hand, look up the package in inventory, or grab a different package of the same product. If the item can’t be matched to a valid record, they generally can’t legally sell it.

What it means for you

Be patient and let them sort it out. A swap is normal. If a product is missing its label or tag entirely, that’s worth questioning rather than accepting. Discrepancies in weight or price are handled the same way: staff check the record, then correct or replace the item. It’s also a good habit to double-check the label on things like a 1g vape cartridge before you leave the counter.
